A homeowner asks ChatGPT who to call for a standby generator install in Tampa. Or they search Google and an AI Overview answers instead of ten blue links. The dealers who get named in those answers are not there by luck. Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews. The strongest factor was not backlinks, not ads, not domain authority. It was how often the brand gets mentioned across the web.
That finding changes what generator dealers should actually do. This page walks through what it means in plain terms, and what I do with it for my own business.
The Ahrefs study found brands in the top quarter for web mentions got up to 10 times more AI mentions than the next group down. YouTube mentions were the single strongest correlated signal. Branded web mentions and brand search volume followed. Backlinks, the old currency of SEO, correlated far weaker.
In plain terms: AI models learn who to recommend from what the web says about you, not just what your own site says. Your Yelp page, your reviews, a local news mention, a chamber of commerce listing, a podcast appearance, a Reddit thread where someone says "I used X dealer and they were solid." Each mention is a vote that ChatGPT and Gemini can actually read.
AI systems cross-check facts about your business: phone number, address, hours, service area. If your site shows one phone number and your Google Business Profile shows another, that mismatch reads as uncertainty. And AI avoids uncertainty at all costs.
AI models map questions to answers. The cleanest way to get cited is content structured as a question with a direct answer under it. "How much does a standby generator cost installed in Houston?" followed by an actual number range and what moves it up or down. Not a 2,000 word essay with the answer buried in paragraph nine.
Human writing carries more weight than AI-generated filler. Since everyone got an AI writing tool, the web flooded with generic text, and the models have learned to discount it. Specifics that only a real installer would know, real numbers, real timelines, are the signal.
Check that AI crawlers can actually reach your site. GPTBot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Applebot all read robots rules. Some security plugins and CDN defaults block them without you ever knowing. If they can't read you, they can't cite you.
On this site my robots.txt welcomes citation bots and blocks pure training scrapers. An llms.txt file gives models a clean map of what Dymify is and where every page lives. Every dealer site can do both in an afternoon.
I run done-for-you Meta ads for standby generator dealers. Every campaign runs offer, then screening questions, then contact fields, so the inquiries that reach you are screened and exclusive. Your team does all the follow-up, you own the account and every contact.
The AI-visibility work above is the slow-burn layer that makes everything else cheaper over time. When a homeowner asks ChatGPT about generator dealers in your county, the goal is that your name is the one the model already trusts.
